Overview

Solers provides IT infrastructure and network security support (overall program) to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration  (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) to ensure systems are developed, deployed, updated, and available allowing NESDIS to fulfill its mission.  Solers’ team ensures the continuous delivery of a high-performance, scalable, and secure network infrastructure.  Solers installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and coordinates the use and proper operation of network systems and infrastructures; configures and manages all network systems and equipment including hardware, software, and peripheral equipment; maintains user accounts and security policies on software and hardware-based routers and switches; coordinates with Information Security personnel to ensure systems and security plans are up to date on all networking platforms; implements, documents, and coordinates network policies, procedures, and standards; and implements security procedures.

 

 

Responsibilities:

Assesses and evaluates the existing network infrastructure and architecture; manages and troubleshoots LAN/WAN environments and associated concerns; installs, configures, and maintains network infrastructure systems including switches, routers, firewalls, AAA, VPN, and other systems and appliances; installs, configures, and optimizes operating system software for network infrastructure devices; understands, configures, and optimizes network communications protocols; understands, configures, and optimizes fault tolerance and high availability systems and protocols; contributes to network design and development; recommends, initiates, and completes network implementation projects; replaces obsolete systems; troubleshoots network problems; produces and updates associated documentation; performs network administration functions; recommends and implements improvements to streamline IT processes and enhance system functionality and reliability; identifies solutions to enhance and improve efficiency, usability, performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness; provides user-support to maximize mission capabilities.

 

The Network Engineer:

  • Understands and is knowledgeable about: IP routing, link aggregation, STP, modular switches and routers, cabling standards, network redundancy, and network security
  • Performs installation of software and firmware on switches and routers
  • Coordinates to plan and execute network upgrades in an operational environment with minimal down-time
  • Able to learn additional skills and incorporate them in daily work
  • Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot and resolve network problems independently or collaborating with a team
  • Willing to work on a team with shared and individual responsibilities
  • Provides metrics as required
  • Provides occasional on-call support during non-working hours
  • Ensures consistency and effectiveness of technical solutions
  • Participates in analyses for alternative products and solutions
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements cost-cutting solutions and efficient practices
  • Participates in design reviews, requirements gathering, and other meetings

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 3-7 years of network administration experience
  • Bachelors Degree (experience may substitute for education)
  • 3+ years of experience performing break fix on enterprise class IP networks
  • Knowledge in the configuration, installation, operation, and maintenance for routers, switches, and firewalls
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Hands-on experience with IT infrastructure, with a concentration in networking - routers, switches, circuits, etc.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage work to critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to analyze risk and report problems concerning system requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • CCNA or CCNP
  • Experience with multiple platforms including Arista, Cisco, Juniper, and/or Palo Alto
